“Pulmonary Fibrosis Journey” is an invaluable resource for people living with pulmonary fibrosis, providing up-to-date and clinically-accurate information through the lens of a sage counselor and compassionate human-being living with the disease. With all of the misinformation out there about pulmonary fibrosis and dearth of clinicians with experience treating the disease, it can be difficult for patients to navigate the diagnosis and subsequent journey. Kim has taught me a lot about the human experience of pulmonary fibrosis over the years, and I’m glad that she will now be able to reach so many others with her powerful insights and perspective. I highly recommend her book for patients, their loved ones, and health care providers alike.
Kim Fredrickson’s personal journey is well described with great sensitivity in her new book “Pulmonary Fibrosis Journal: A Counselor and Fellow Patient Walks with You.” Her extensive background as a counselor contributes to her thoughtfulness as she describes her day to day living with pulmonary fibrosis. This is a great read for patients and their caregivers who are looking for realistic information on ways to cope with pulmonary fibrosis.
I have been privileged to have a bird’s eye view as Kim put together this labor of love, passion, and duty. Her writing style comes from the heart with a sound wisdom that only someone who has walked the walk can provide. Her tips are practical, as they come from personal experience but comprehensive as she collaborates and seeks the opinions and experiences of others freely; with her own clinical training thrown in for good measure. I highly recommend this book to anyone dealing with PF, and their family, friends, and caregivers; as well as anyone else who may need a little pick me up!
You will treasure this book. Pulmonary Fibrosis Journey is a compassionate and comprehensive guide through each aspect of a patient’s experience. As a fellow PF patient, career therapist and educator, Kim has a unique ability to inform, empower and encourage her readers. She offers practical tools and solutions which will benefit patients, families and caretakers. I highly recommend this book.
Pulmonary Fibrosis Journey by Kim Fredrickson is more than a book about the journey a person with IPF faces and lives with. It is a resource and a testament to the strength and power of the human spirit and an inspiring guide sprinkled with wisdom, insight and common sense about living with a life-threatening disease like IPF. As a fellow patient (and admirer of this strong woman) I recommend Pulmonary Fibrosis Journey to patients, caregivers, families, and friends who want to better understand how to live with IPF.
Reading Kim’s book is akin to chatting with a dear friend over a cup of tea. She writes warmly and intimately and shares her own story freely, without hesitation. Her book also doubles as a guidebook that everyone with PF, their caregivers/family should take with them to medical appointments. The section on palliative care is especially valuable. The benefits of and access to palliative and hospice care should be available to everyone living with PF. No one should fear a death of suffering, gasping for air, or facing the end of life alone and isolated. Thank you, Kim.
Kim Fredrickson is an articulate caring woman who understands so much about this disease because she lives with Pulmonary Fibrosis every day. I found this to be clear concise book with some wonderful tips for getting through the day to day struggles of PF. Being a caretaker for my husband there are clear tips as to how to care for him and what to expect in the future. It is a very difficult situation to watch him and pray he continues to stay stable. Thank you so much Kim for writing such a wonderful book.
Kim Fredrickson is a licensed marriage and family therapist of thirty years. She loves to teach others about the power of self-compassion from a faith perspective. She is the author of Pulmonary Fibrosis Journey: A Counselor and Fellow Patient Walks with You, The Power of Positive Self-Talk and Give Your Kids a Break: Parenting with Compassion for You and Your Children. She recently retired from her counseling practice when diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, a terminal lung disease that developed as a rare complication from the chemotherapy and radiation she received for breast cancer.
After being diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, she decided to write Give Your Kids a Break (2017) as a way to have a positive influence in the lives of her adult children and her future grandchildren. Kim wanted to help them with the challenges of parenting, when the time came. She knew she wouldn’t be around to hold her grandbabies, and help her children raise them in person. Originally it was only going to be for them. As Kim wrote, she thought others might benefit as well, so decided to self-publish it.
4 ½ years after being diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, Kim decided to write Pulmonary Fibrosis Journey: A Counselor and Fellow Patient Walks with You (2018). Kim walks with patients and their loved ones as they deal with the confusion, fears, and grief that comes with this diagnosis. She gives readers up-to-date information about diagnosis, treatment, oxygen use, staying as healthy as possible, the stages of PF plus a whole lot more. Kim shows readers how to navigate the emotional, physical and spiritual challenges of dealing with this illness. You don’t have to do this alone!
